Acting on Climate: How Actors and Artists Are Leading Environmental Advocacy

“The Earth does not belong to us; we belong to the Earth,” a reflection widely attributed to Chief Seattle, continues to echo as an urgent reminder in the face of accelerating climate change. As the global community confronts this defining challenge of the 21st century, artists and performers worldwide are harnessing their creativity and public platforms to raise awareness, inspire action, and foster environmental stewardship.

Dubai, a city known for its rapid development and architectural innovation, is also increasingly embracing sustainability—a trend mirrored in its emerging cultural scene. This reflects a global movement where art and activism converge to bring the climate crisis into sharper focus.

Global Voices Amplifying Climate Awareness

Internationally, prominent actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio have used their influence to spotlight environmental issues. DiCaprio’s 2016 documentary, Before the Flood, produced in partnership with National Geographic, explored the impacts of climate change and advocated for renewable energy solutions. His role as a United Nations Messenger of Peace for Climate has further amplified his environmental advocacy on global stages.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) routinely partners with artists and cultural figures to elevate climate messages. This collaboration recognizes storytelling and performance as vital tools to engage diverse audiences and spur collective action.

Musicians and composers have also joined the cause. Gustavo Dudamel, the acclaimed conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, has publicly supported environmental initiatives, using music as a unifying force to engage communities worldwide.

Dubai’s Commitment to Sustainability and Culture

Dubai’s sustainability ambitions are embodied in initiatives like the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which aims for 75% of the emirate’s energy to come from clean sources by 2050. Moreover, Dubai hosted COP28 in 2023, the 28th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties, positioning the city as a global platform for climate dialogue.

While Dubai’s arts scene is still growing, local institutions such as the Dubai Opera and cultural festivals increasingly include themes of environmental responsibility in their programming. The city’s commitment to hosting international events reflects its evolving role as a cultural crossroads where global conversations—including on climate—can flourish.

The Enduring Power of Art

As Pablo Picasso famously said, “Art is a lie that makes us realize the truth.” Environmental art and performance transform scientific data into emotional experiences that resonate deeply with audiences. Olafur Eliasson’s Ice Watch Installations—bringing melting Arctic ice to public spaces—have vividly illustrated the realities of global warming. Similarly, Agnes Denes’s 1982 artwork Wheatfield — A Confrontation remains a seminal example of art confronting ecological issues.

Such works prove that art can stimulate empathy, an essential ingredient for behavioral change. It turns abstract concepts into tangible experiences that motivate audiences to rethink their relationship with the planet.

Looking Ahead

As Dubai continues to expand its global influence economically and culturally, its emerging engagement with environmental advocacy through art signals a promising direction. The city’s unique position as a nexus for commerce, culture, and climate diplomacy provides fertile ground for creative expression that champions sustainability.

Echoing Margaret Mead’s timeless insight, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has,” the growing community of artists and performers using their craft for climate advocacy reminds us that culture can be a powerful force for planetary healing.
