DP World Acquires Container Vessel to Expand Indian Coastal Shipping Network
DP World’s Marine Services division, Shipping Solutions, has acquired the DP World Indus, a container vessel with a capacity of more than 2,500 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), to support domestic coastal trade across India.
The acquisition expands DP World’s coastal network in the region, which currently connects 14 ports utilizing a dedicated fleet of 10 vessels. In 2025, the company's coastal shipping operations in India handled over 473,000 TEUs. As part of its initial deployment, the India-flagged vessel made its maiden call at the DP World-operated Jeddah South Container Terminal.
Company officials stated the investment aims to improve supply chain efficiency and reduce reliance on long-haul road transport. Ganesh Raj, Global Chief Operating Officer of Marine Services at DP World, noted that the acquisition follows findings from the company's 2025 report, "Enhancing India’s Ship Registry: Pathways to Global Competitiveness." The report detailed recommendations for governance reform, fiscal incentives, and green initiatives aligned with the Indian government's Maritime Vision 2030.
To further scale its regional maritime operations, DP World’s Shipping Solutions previously signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Sagarmala Finance Corporation Limited, a Government of India enterprise operating under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
